The cooler winter months brought more time in the Loft Studio. I completed two art quilts to enter in the “ARTQUILTS:whimsy” show which will be held in Cary, NC’s Page Walker Art and History Center. It was fun to watch Nancy G. Cook, art quilter, and Brian Ellis, art professor, examine the projected digital entries. It seems that pinning down exactly what is “whimsical” is not that easy, but they did a great job of selecting about 40 quilts out of 142 entries. The show will be held from April 23-June 22. Come on down to Cary to see the show, or watch the PAQA-South web site for photographs after the art is hung. Here’s the “ARTQUILT:whimsy” entry by me that was juried into the show! I think the show will be great fun to see because the theme is so light-hearted, and the entries so creatively illustrated the theme.
A young mother’s quick shot of her son calling her, like he does several dozen times a day, results in a truly whimsical view of his round little face framed by the culvert that runs under their driveway. Painting the circular rings on batik fabric with fabric dyes created the culvert which was enhanced with machine embroidery. The face is pieced and then embroidered, and a touch of fabric paint is added for the finish. The art quilt was inspired by a photo was taken by my niece, Kristi, of her young son, Dalton.

In January, I completed the “Poinsettia Power!” wall art quilt that I started before the holidays. Both “Poinsettia Power!” and “Farm Home” were accepted for the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in Hampton, Virginia. It was great fun to walk through the displays of quilts and enjoy the vast variety and excellent workmanship.

Mary, your wall art quilts are truly beautiful and you certainly serve to only enhance them more!! The colors and details are portrayed in a manner that they become life-like and real. A true pleasure to the eye. Congratulations again on two more masterpieces.
