CAROLINA SPRINGTIME: (57”w x 40”h) 2018 Dogwoods! Wisteria! Cherry Blossoms? Who wouldn’t be passionate about North Carolina’s springtime which showcases beautiful blossoming trees. Driving through the woods that align the roadways, one can see deeply into dark thickets where bright blossoms seem to provide their own sunshine. Listen! You can hear the birds enjoying their shelters therein. The shimmering blossoms serenaded by birdsong inspired this art quilt.
Sweet Tropical Sunshine: 53”w x 51”h Living in the bitter cold MN winters in the early 2000s found me wanting to make some of my own Hawaiian sunshine! This was my first art quilt.
Tropical Ocean Sunset: (33″w x 37″h) 2013 As the hydrofoil glides over the waves between Maui and Oahu, the sun slides slowly beneath the horizon. The ocean’s glistens in the reflection of its light, a glorious image seared into memory. A traditional Hawaiian pineapple design is whimsically depicted as the sun which is setting over the ocean, creating the vivid colors depicted by the fabric and rovings. The white pearl beads highlight the ocean waves.
Freedoms Four: (36w x 38h) 2017 I am passionate about the constitution of our nation and its Bill of Rights. Freedoms Four reflects my concern that the freedoms we have enjoyed since the United States was formed are being eroded and destroyed. We, the citizenry, must VOTE, communicate with the elected officials, and be involved in order to preserve the rights embraced by our founders. It is not the intention for this piece to be pretty; the colors are meant to draw the eye so the content will be studied and absorbed.

Cordova, Spain: Ancient Voices: Standing in the nave of the Mezquita-Catedral de Cordoba and listening to the all-encompassing pipe organ moved me. Built first as a mosque, the chanting of Moslem voices dominated for 700 years. When the region was conquered by the Pope, the mosque was not razed as was customary, but a Roman Catholic nave was built in the center of the mosque. Thus, the intermingling Muslim and Christian VOICES mixed in spirit, inspiring me to create Las Mezquita and the city Cordoba, past and present, that surrounds it. Revisiting this piece in 2018, I painted it to add luster and contrast. 30″w x 32″h
An ancient waterwheel in Cordova, Spain, overlooks the Old Roman Bridge which spans the … Gaudalquiver River. 21”w x 13”h
Le Fleures pour Grand-Mere: (24”x24”) 2017 The life, energy and color in a photograph of my 99 year-old mother when she received her bouquet of roses on Mother’s Day was an inspiration that Van Gogh would have loved. Traveling the world and creating artwork that tells the story of places I’ve visited and people I’ve known, are two of my passions. After visiting Auberge Ravoux in Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris where Van Gogh lived his last days, I was inspired to study and appreciate his artwork and techniques. This piece is the result of that interest. Created in the style of Van Gogh. NFS
En Vacance: (24”x24”) 2017 This tourist relaxes and watches the world go by. Created in the style of Van Gogh. NFS
GREAT LAKE! WINDY CITY! SO BIG (20”w x 27”h) This piece is inspired by a photograph taken by my niece, Lisa Arneson. The juxtaposition of Lake Michigan, Chicago and little Emmett created the metaphorical connection. The sky was pieced in small colors to represent the fog rolling into the city with the sun just breaking through. The lake is shimmering in the back areas, but full of color and personality when nearby. NFS
Fall Frenzy: 2014 The children are enjoying a frolicking time in the leaves, but big sister is about to spring a surprise. This is a whimsical experience that many of us have experienced or observed in our own place in time. The entire piece was painted on a recycled piece of cotton broadcloth. Machine embroidery and quilting add detail to the faces and background objects. Inspired by a photograph taken by Jody Cahill, mother of two children, Morgan and Emmett. NFS
Look, Mom! (28”w x 21”h) 2014 A young mother’s quick shot of her son calling her, like he does several dozen times a day, results in a truly whimsical view of his round little face framed by the culvert that runs under their driveway. Painting the circular rings on batik fabric with fabric dyes created the circular shape of the culvert, along with quilting to emphasize the tunnel effect. The face is pieced and then embroidered, and a touch of fabric paint is added for the finish. This piece is inspired by a photograph taken by Kristi Enevoldsen, mother of the little boy, Dalton.
Farm Home:The Farm Home is centered on the house, but the story it tells is about all of the activity that was ongoing when we were youngsters. A girl swings, the laundry is on the line, a girl reads under a tree, a boy works on his fort in the woods, a girl carries a pail towards the flooded creek, a boy drifts down the flooded creek on his homemade raft, a man drives a tractor, a woman sweeps the steps, a child picks a flower while another child is climbing up the side of the silo. All of these things occurred at some point in and around the three generations that have occupied this farm home since 1946. Measures 46″w x 40″h Not for sale.
The Old Red Barn Still Stands!
Artist Statement: This was created for my dad’s 90th birthday, September 28, 2008. He lived until April 2009. The design pretty accurately depicts on the barn on our farm where I was raised with my five siblings. My dad would have a morning cup of coffee and look out of the front window from the house. The barn and farm site was his view that window while he lived there. When he was in the nursing home, I created THE OLD BARN STILL STANDS! to hang over his bed so it would be the first thing he would see in the morning. (Not for sale)
Solitude: Church on Sunday and Snow in Winter:Nothing could have been more routine in my childhood in Minnesota as snow in winter and church on Sunday. This studio art panel combines the two in a folk art scene which is one of the styles I enjoy. Commercial fabrics are combined with artist printed fabric, including silk and 100% cotton. Superior Threads – cotton polyester and silk. Machine pieced and quilted. Poem By William Stafford. 32″w x 62″h Not for Sale
